Electric Guitar Building From Home - Is It Possible?

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyqBuG4N2Ne92zIa-JbPeIRr_wzlFEl9IC3VJmPQIJ9xazG8N68tiRsKEdj_V_x0Qh46bOo9Va03IbE-BrYnY8W7yTUsK1NRD5C8ebErBD5t3qojSwLA1-pQtlBnvgBR6Q_c8SiUaMsso/s1600/electric-guitar-strings.jpgJust like me you are an keen guitar player, you would possibly at some period have pondered how complicated it could be to one day build your own electric guitar from your home. It is a question that I pondered many years ago and since then I have built numerous guitars employing relatively fundamental and reasonably priced tools.Yes it truly is undoubtedly possible to build a fine instrument at home, and below I will tell you some tips I have gathered over time and also some of the tools I have used. The very first thing I would recommend is to look online for one of the many books on electric guitar building. In addition there are some extremely good websites providing very helpful information on the subject.

The next thing for you to do will be to get started drawing the body shape of the guitar you would like on a large sheet of paper. Check out different double and single cutaway designs available on the market to help you with your style and design. You might of course just decide to emulate one of the famed designs.

To start your project you will need to find a good work space (the garage is often excellent) and some high-quality hardwood. You will discover many retailers of instrument wood online and if you do some research you can discover what hardwoods have been utilised by the primary manufacturers, for example Gibson and Fender. You will need wood for the body, neck and fretboard.

Many of the companies will also supply much of the hardware necessary for the project for example the machine heads, fret wire, bridge, tailpiece etc. They would even offer pearl inlays for the fret board. For the guitar pickups I would go to a specialist maker as good quality humbuckers, Stratocaster, P-90 or Telecaster pickups are essential.

As far as the various tools needed to do the job go, there will be a need for general woodworking tools such as: files, electric sander, electric drill, jig saw, chisels, good quality steel ruler, sandpaper, coping saw, fret saw, soldering iron, good wood glue, some strong clamps and so on. There will also be the need for a few more advanced electric tools, the most vital being the electric router. The router will be the electric guitar makers number one friend and will be implemented through the entire project to do several tasks for example: routing out the pickup and control cavities, routing the guitar neck socket along with the truss rod channel and lots of other tasks. You could potentially manage with a lot of chiseling rather than a router but I would not advise this, especially as routers have come down so much in cost. Some people firmly insist that you must have a band saw to cut out the body and neck shapes but I have constantly managed very well with a good quality jig saw.

Other tools that I use that are not critical are an electric spindle sander, a drill press and a little hobby drill. The spindle sander is an excellent way of sanding the body and neck sides without burning the wood. The jig saw can cut to within just 5mm of the finished design and the spindle sander can finish up to the template line.

One of the most difficult areas of the entire process will be the cutting of the fret slots as these need to be really accurate. Fortunately some companies provide fret boards already slotted.

When you have the appropriate wood, your design on paper, your tools (normal plus some advanced) and your components, you're on your way.

This is not a 'how to' article, it strives to address whether it is possible to make an electric guitar from your home, which it most definitely is. Of course it goes without saying that electric tools can be extremely dangerous and you should only undertake a project like this if you're self-assured in your woodworking capability, if not, you might have to simply buy a guitar after all.

The author has been a very keen guitarist for countless years and loves to play, repair and build these instruments. He recommends Tub Guitar Pickups for your project build as they provide high quality pickups of many styles including: Tele Pickups and Stratocaster Pickups.

House Music and the Digital Age

House music has always been pushed forward by DJ's wanting and craving new music. Music that their peer's haven't yet heard let alone had the ability to own. Music that is upfront and rare.
As the volume of dance labels and artists increased towards the end of the last millennium, mainly due to the ability to produce very highly polished music on a simple pc, the sales quantity of each release decreased as the market did not increase with amount of new music flooding in. With this change record companies needed to address costs to reflect these lower sales. Label's looked to technology to help cut the costs of running their business. One major area where this came to fruition was promotions.

For years the DJ's choice and only option was vinyl, clubs only had vinyl turntables and in the odd instance where they did have CD turntables they were very poor. This changed with the launch of the pioneer CDJ series. DJ's were suddenly able to do everything they could on vinyl turntables and more but using CD's. Labels had previously had only one option to press a run of promotional records to send out to DJ's. The cost of manufacture and shipping to DJ's was huge. Overnight DJ's could use CD's. It's much cheaper to manufacture and half the price to ship, an added bonus was that music could be burnt straight from a pc where the track had been written and in a DJ's hands the following day being played to a packed club that evening. For labels and producers this was a fantastic way to promote new music and for the DJ this was bliss new music really quickly - fresh and exclusive! All went well with this new format until the mp3 came along.

Suddenly promotional music was finding its way onto the file sharing sites like Limewire and Soulseek. DJ's who had been sent music on CD or even emailed as mp3's began sharing this music. The thought process behind people doing this went against all that had gone before as most DJ's hide their secret weapons rather than sharing with anyone at all. This had a knock on by taking the control the labels had of who had their product when and where away. Also potential revenue began being lost and to a section of the music industry where every sale counts this was frustrating and hugely detrimental.

Dance music releases usually only have a shelf life of around 8 weeks. There are obvious exceptions to this rule but 95% of releases are played in clubs and sell for this length of time and that's it. File sharing screwed this up by both the sales and also the structure of the chosen few influencing bigger DJ's not having something they can fully get behind during the promotional stage of a release. Therefore less people got to hear it, less are influenced and less potentially buy it.

The industry has never really recovered from file sharing but more recently the sale of mp3's and specifically dance music mp3's has boomed and this has helped to a certain extent slow the decline and with time the scene could once again flourish. The one problem dance music has encountered with sales of mp3's is price but that is another story

The City of Live Music

Anyone who lives in Austin knows why the city council adopted the slogan “live music capital of the world” in 1991. For those just visiting, the city offers many opportunities to find out.
The famed music scene of Austin began in the 60s and 70s at the Vulcan Gas Company. Musicians played country music here to crowds of loud and enthusiastic fans. Willie Nelson moved to Austin in 1965 and kick started his career in front of these audiences. He went on to become one of the most successful country music artists of all time. Not long after, the Vulcan Gas Company became known as the Armadillo World Headquarters, or just The Armadillo, and Austin’s music really took off.

As the music scene grew more popular, Austin gained a reputation for welcoming struggling artists. Bands and singers knew they would find receptive audiences at numerous informal establishments and the type of music played expanded to include jazz, blues, rock and roll, and everything in between.
The music scene in Austin has fostered the career of many now famous musicians. Perhaps the most legendary, Stevie Ray Vaughan is one of the most influential blues guitarists in the world. He first played at Antone’s, the club founded by his mentor and record producer, Clifford Antone.

Television and annual festivals have helped Austin develop into the live music capital. The show Austin City Limits first aired on PBS in 1975. The live music experience showcased the variety of artists heard in Austin and helped significantly to grow the city’s music reputation. Almost every kind of music imaginable can be heard at the three day Austin City Limits Music Festival held every September. Since its inception in 2002, it has become one of the premier music festivals in the country.
The Sixth Street area of downtown Austin houses the largest collection of live music venues and is the location of the South by Southwest Festival. SXSW, as it is known, is a music and film festival that has generated more revenue than even the Texas Longhorn’s home games.

Certainly, the times of year that coincide with the music festivals are the most exciting for fans of live music. At any other time of year, tourists may be disappointed with the atmosphere of the famed Sixth Street area. Several of the original, small music venues have closed and in their place are more profitable bars and clubs.
While some may believe the eclectic, small feel of Austin’s music scene is waning, others still revel in the live entertainment.

Why Hindi Film Song Lyrics Are Popular Across the World ???

It is a well deserved statement that "there is at least one Hindi film song for every season and every reason." And the secret behind the statement is the fact that most Hindi film songs have lyrics, which people can easily relate to and identify with.
The popularity of Hindi film songs has only soared up worldwide, ever since the Hindi film industry came into being. In fact, I would like to state that the evergreen romance between individuals and Hindi song lyrics just gets better and better with time. You may find it a bit humorous, if I say that Hindi film songs are like legacies that gets passed on from one generation to another. I have at least five songs that I know my father enjoys listening to even today. Whenever we meet, we play those songs and enjoy them together. However, the songs really do not belong to the era of films that I grew up watching. These films released much before I was born but the appeal and popularity of these songs are just as good even today!

What appeals to me about these songs? The lyrics of course! Because the kind of music these songs have are of another generation. So it may not be easy to relate to the sound, technology or even the vibration of the music, but the lyrics of the songs weave a story well told. And you can easily hear and enjoy each time the songs play. Music is a strong reflection of any generation. Even if all the songs may not appeal to everyone from a particular generation but lyrics go on to become ever lasting. I think lyrics of a song remains the core emotion of a heart, musicians may disagree with it though. And Hindi film songs are soulful because of their lyrics. We do often feel while listening to or reading the lyrics, that it exactly talks about what our hearts have to say but said in a beautiful poetry. And its exciting to see how talented musicians convert even a common feeling into chart-busting songs! I have a song for every season, for every person in my life and for almost every emotion that I feel. Why? Simple, because the lyrics of the songs echo my feelings and emotions just the way I feel.

The world is becoming smaller with each passing day and with technology, it seems like a parallel world out there, yes, I mean, the virtual world where nothing is at a distance. Almost everything is a click away! In a world like this, if one wants to listen to a song it's just a click away and the lyrics of the songs available online are like the icing of the cake! Gone are the days when one had to struggle to find the lyrics of the favorite songs.

Every teenager has a Hindi film song that he/she identifies with while bearing the roller coaster journey of the teenage. Students in campus world over still drool over "yaaron dosti badi hi haseen hai, ye na ho to phir kya bolo ye zindagi hai". I remember meeting some tourists from Europe during one of my trip when they mentioned that they love the Hindi film songs and more because of the words in the song! I was surprised to hear this and asked them if they understood Hindi. They replied with a smile that they search the lyrics translation online! They mentioned something which is still today permanently stamped on my mind. They said, "Hindi film songs blend the words and music like no other music does. The melody attracts us to the song and then we look for the lyrics to understand the song and enjoy it more. The lyrics so amazingly reflect human emotions. Wow, I love Hindi film song lyrics, don't you?"

In India and for Indians across across the world, I guess no birthday celebration is complete without the Hindi song "hum bhi agar bachche hote, naam hamara hota dubloo bubloo, khane ko milte laddoo aur duniya kehti Happy Birthday to you." (If we were children too, and we had lovely names like dubloo or bubloo, we would get sweets to eat and the world would wish us Happy birthday).

Ask any love birds, they will always have one Hindi film song that best describes their association and their love affair. Why? For the lyrics again! The eternal love song, "Aapki nazron ne samjha pyar ke kabil mujhe" is still in every lover's heart! The generation today most definitely have much more choices of music to listen to but if you secretly ask them, they will mention at least one Hindi film song that is closest to their heart..

Whether it is a wedding, engagement or any other occasion where there is a group of people, the celebrations are never complete without the Hindi films songs playing in the background. Often people scream, "hey, that's my song, my song!!" Need I explain yet again why? Thanks to the mass appeal of the lyrics of Hindi film songs, they will always remain dear to us. Whatever music we may hear during the day, we definitely come back to the Hindi film songs that keeps us connected to ourselves. Long lives the lyricist who wrote "chalte chalte mere yeh geet yaad rakhna, kabhi alvida na kehna".

The Ways For Understanding the Future of Music

They say that if you can see a bandwagon, then the chances are that you have already missed it. This applies very much to music, and yet there are many different musical styles that go against the grain and have an enduring appeal. Therefore, when it comes to understanding the future of music, it can be simultaneously very easy and very hard to know what the next big thing will be.Whilst certain sub genres will come and go from a collective musical preference with astonishing regularity, other forms of music will very much have a firm hold over the majority of people and continue to be successful for many years or even decades. Good quality pop music is something that will almost never seem to go out of fashion, and simply adding a slightly different beat or sound will be all that it takes to turn any such pop song into something that easily fits the current mould.

Rock and acoustic music is harder to judge. The addition or even absence of certain traditional or modern hooks can make a massive difference in style and sub-genres of this type of music will be coming and going in popularity all the time.
The current outlook for music is very much one lead by samples and loops. Hip hop samples and dubstep loops are starting to crop up in almost all genres of music and this crossing of genres is likely to only get more popular over the coming year. Therefore, for those looking to make it as the next big thing in music, it might well be worth considering how such dubstep loops and hip hop samples might help to flavour the music you create in the right way.

That, or simply write a few simple pop songs as these will have an audience no matter when you want to try and make it big.

The Five Bad Points of Mainstream Pop Music

1. The actors in the music video
If it's a music video like g6 then you will most likely hate the video aspect, everyone is pretty much annoying, even the people singing the song. And this is one of the reasons I listen to Asian pop music; in Asia they're pretty big on pop groups, and they're not like the black eyed peas...(shudder) No, they dance in the videos, so they aren't looking at the camera trying to be cool but coming off as a total.

2. Stupid lyrics.
Most people complain about the lyrics in songs not rhyming, but in my opinion those people need to shut up. Songs don't have to rhyme, but if you're going to make some of the song rhyme and then give up half way through, that's just not acceptable.
Or, the problem could just be stupid lyrics. Sometimes they can go off on to something that has nothing to do with the subject of the song, or the song can be about something entirely stupid like getting drunk constantly. (good job music industry.)

Who do you think we have to blame for teens going out and getting wasted...well apart from their parents, or the person's personality and intelligence? Music! Music that keeps reinforcing the idea that cool people go to parties and get drunk all the time. And all American teens seem to care about is being cool, normally I wouldn't say that we should act more like the Japanese as they're not exactly perfect, but the Japanese encourage their kids to be nerds, and a nerd does not mean an annoying person whom constantly has a cold or only cares about their studies. You can be good at school and still be cool. If I could mention a nerd who got top billing I would say Light from Death Note, but he's insane, he kind of went around killing people... But he got all the ladies!... and then killed them...Ya... I'll stop talking now...

3. Guest verses.
Annoying guest verses, sometimes songs have a guest who sings a bit, and most of us think the song would be much better without them, like JYJ's 'Ayy Girl' (though it was, obviously, a stupid name for a song, and the music video wasn't very good even if the song was.)

The song was ruined by the guest verse at the beginning by Kanye West, who was (briefly) an interwebs meme. Or, sometimes guest verses can be used to point something out, for example G-Dragons heart breaker met with complaints because people were saying that he had stolen part of his song from the rapper Flo Rida. (I don't even know if that's how you spell the guys name, and am I supposed to capitalize it? Well it is a name so I guess I have to.) But, after the song had gotten complaints G-Dragon rewrote the song in a way, that seemed as if he was saying, 'You're kidding me right, look if it's that much of a problem then I'll just rewrite the song, geez'. Anyway, that's something I generally don't like, guest verses.

4. Annoying synch sounds.
This one is pretty self explanatory, sometimes if the actual music has gone overboard with the electronic beats it can feel like it's invading your personal space, sort of, well that's what it feels like to me. And sometimes the instrumental is way too loud and you can't even hear the singer, but I guess sometimes that's a good thing.

5. Whenever someone holds a long note and they auto tune it.
I have heard a lot of pop songs and a fair few have auto tuned some bit's that would be fine with out the auto tune! So why do it?

The Different Types of Harmonicas

Whether you're an old hand who has enjoyed the harmonica for years or are just now considering picking one up for the first time it's helpful to know a bit about this instrument you play. The harmonica has been given many pet names such as the mouth organ, mouth harp, french harp, or blues harp. It has been embraced by cultures and music styles around the world. Harmonicas are all at heart an arrangement of reeds and air passages that allow breath blown into them to be channeled through specific reeds to create a harmonica note of a given pitch. Harmonicas used for different styles and types of music differ less in the construction of the instrument and more in the way they are played.

The diatonic harmonica is the configuration most people think of when they think of a harmonica. It is usually made with ten holes or air passages and ten corresponding sets of reeds that are tuned to vibrate at the pitches of notes in the scale in the key the harmonica is tuned for. The reed plates are made so one plate is intended to play when air is blown through the air passage and the other plate will play a slightly higher or lower note when air is drawn in through the same air passage. A harmonica with ten air holes will produce 20 individual notes, each reed producing a distinctive tone. There is so much music and instructional material written in the key of C that is an excellent choice for the beginner to start with.

When considering what to look for in a harmonica it is more important to buy a quality instrument than to pick one manufacturer over another. There are a number of great manufacturers such as Hohner, Suzuki, Lee Oskar and Hering who all produce top quality harps. Many people commonly find it helpful to try several models over time before they settle on a favorite.

The Chromatic harmonica is another common type of instrument, it most often will have twelve, fourteen or sixteen holes. Instead of having only two reeds per hole, you will find four reeds in each. There is also a slide mechanism that can be shifted side to side, When moved, the slide controls the flow of air into the reeds giving four notes instead of two from each hole. This allows a greater range of notes than the diatonic harmonica. This harp most often would be a good choice for a more advanced player and requires more time to master. This instrument is used extensively in the jazz and blues world. Stevie Wonder is an excellent example of a musician with great skill with this harmonica.

The Tremolo Or Echo Harp Harmonica is still another type of harmonica. It is made with two reeds per harmonica note, unlike the diatonic harmonica which has only one. There is an additional separation between the upper and lower reeds plates in this instrument creating an air passage for each reed. For each pair of reeds one reed is pitched slightly flat and the other is pitched slightly sharp. The result is a tone that appears to echo when air is passed through the reeds. It's distinctive sound gives a lot of bang for your buck, this type of harmonica is not difficult to play but is a little higher priced than the typical diatonic harp.

The person who chooses to pick up this instrument can enjoy the rewards of creating beautiful music with ease. Whatever your favorite style of music you can enjoy playing harmonica for a lifetime. You're never too old or young to start.

Music Lessons For Beginner

If you are a parent of a young child, then now is the perfect time to introduce music. Some theories have even proven that if you play music to your baby while it is in the womb or when it is an infant then it will improve all types of things, such as their IQ and their motor skills. Before your child becomes impressionable through schooling and other children, you should introduce them to music while they still have such an open and fresh mind.

For this purpose, music lessons are an asset. It is an effective way to help your child learn to play any type of instrument, and you might find out that your child is very gifted when it comes to the art of music. Figuring out where to begin with music lessons is usually the hardest step for parents. They are unsure which instrument to purchase for their child and they are unsure as to which teacher to choose or who might be safe for their child.

It is first important to understand what happens in a typical lesson environment. The teacher, or experienced musician, helps share his or her expertise on the instrument with the student. During the lesson, the teacher observes the difficulties that the student might be having as well as noticing their strengths. The teacher will then introduce newer and harder concepts as the student progresses, which can only happen with practice and homework.

One factor to keep in mind if you are considering music lessons is that they do require much more commitment both on your part and your child as opposed to cub scouts or dance lessons. This is due to the fact that most of the learning is your child’s responsibility. It is up to them how advanced they become with the instrument, and it is based on how often they practice. One thing that many children forget is that they are supposed to practice at home, not just with their teacher. Without the practice, your child’s progress will not excel and you will end up paying more money than you expected for the teacher’s time.

You should also remember that this is supposed to be fun for a child. While practice does make perfect, never force your child to do something such as practice. While you should encourage it, forcing them only makes them dislike the instrument that much more. Their heart truly has to be in it in order for them to excel at the art. Usually, as your child gains confidence and starts to see how well they are doing with the instrument, then they will eventually become very passionate. Having them partake in music lessons not only gives them the confidence but it will help with their focus and concentration in school.

Usually, children at the age of 7 and up will be the best candidates for music lessons because they already have a desire to learn, have great listening skills, and a willingness to practice. Younger children also advance well in music lessons, but it is more common if they are in a group environment that is slightly more playful. Starting your children young in a music class will help them gain a passion for the art and prepare them for regular music lessons when they are a little older. You can also have your own music time at home if you have younger children. Encourage them to sing silly songs, make home-made musical instruments, or even buy them a kid sized instrument.

No matter what you decide to do, remember that music lessons will be a valuable investment towards your child’s future. You need to be prepared to commit to it just as they will so that you can make sure they attend the classes and are positive about practicing. With your guidance and patience, your child could be on their way to being the next musical genius.

The Unseen Benefits of Music Education

"Musicians are more successful than non-musicians in learning to incorporate sound patterns for a new language into words. Children who are musically trained show stronger neural activation to pitch changes in speech and have a better vocabulary and reading ability than children who did not receive music training." - article featured on The Science Daily

Time and time again I am seeing more and more research that shows the benefits of a musical education. I think one of the most frustrating things felt as a piano teacher in Vancouver is the feeling that music is always on the outskirts of an educational curriculum. The arts are the first programs to get cuts when the economy is down, and anyone thinking of a career in the music industry will not be guaranteed a passive income, if that exists at all. So why should our educational institutions encourage students to partake in such a seemingly "frivolous" endeavor?

The best answer I can come up with is summed up in one word: cross-training. Think of it like this. Say you start up a new fitness regime, involving heavy weights and 20 minutes of cardio. If you are starting up from scratch after not exercising for years, this is going to be a very difficult time for you.Now lets say that previously, you had just trained for a running marathon. You don't have the muscle yet that weight training would bring, but you do have a) really amazing cardio and b) mental toughness to stick it through. Now you go to the gym with an edge, and your new fitness regime at the gym will seem that much easier.
Music should be no different. Music trains our brains to hear sounds embedded in a rich network of melodies. This can mean the difference between having a slight accent when learning a second language, or a really bad accent. Musicians are constantly memorizing new chord progressions and song structures, which only aids us when trying to memorize new words in a new language.

There is a ton of math in music theory too. In fact, some of the tables I referenced while studying advanced jazz theory in college looked a lot like trigonometry diagrams! A recent Rockerfeller Foundation Study found that music majors have the highest rate of admittance to medical schools, followed by biochemistry and the humanities. If that's not enough, a musical education helped one doctor by the name of Leopold Auenbrugger develop an important diagnosing tool to be used on patience suspected of harboring fluid in the lungs. Music had given him the sense for tones, trained his mind to hear sounds with acute awareness, and he used these attained skills to tap upon a patience's chest to listen for sounds of a fluid filled lung, like those found with pneumonia.

So don't bypass a musical education. You don't know where or how the benefits of a musical education will show up in later years!
